In August, Girls Run the World kick off their month long trail running challenge in association with Salomon Running to help increase women’s participation in trail and ultra running and boost diversity
While more women are running than ever, participation in trail running lags behind. Worry about getting lost, safety, and even not realising that running on trails is an option are just some of the many reasons.
At the 2019 Ultra Trail de Mont Blanc for instance, 11% of the 2200 runners were women. And when it comes to the numbers of women of colour, the figures are practically non-existent.
Lack of diversity
Only 11% of recreational runners hail from BAME backgrounds. And they make up just 1% of visitors to national parks in the UK. Search the hashtag ‘trail running’ on Instagram, and you can count on two hands how many women of colour appear.
Our month long trail running challenge, the V Ultra Alps (from August 1-31st) in support of Refuge is designed to increase female participation in trail running as a whole, along with diversity.
A free to enter 31 day virtual running challenge, the virtual route will take you around the Alps, following in the path of the UTMB. Run it or hike it, you decide, just complete 106 miles in the month.
It will be accompanied by online training resources to help you improve your running technique on trails, alongside tips on navigation and more. You will be even be able to see where you are on the virtual route, and your position on the final leaderboard results.
Our mission is to flood social media with images of women and women of colour out on the trails during the campaign with the hashtags #grtwrunhigh and #grtwdiversity. Our podcasts exploring race representation in endurance sport, all point to the lack of representation seen in images on social and in the media. Let’s change that!
Can we get 5000 women out on the trails, whether it’s a local park, woodland or national park this August? We can with your help!
Enter below and spread the word via social media, to your friends and running colleagues. Let’s challenge the status quo!
The V Ultra Alps offers two options, a month long challenge or a week’s race between 10-16th August depending on your level. Both are in support of the charity, Refuge.
